Auction of Slovenian Contemporary Art

November 22, 2015, at 18.00

DLUL Gallery, Breg 22, Ljubljana

PROJECT FOR THE PROMOTION AND POPULARIZATION OF SLOVENIAN CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS TOWARDS OR IN SEARCH OF A NEW SYSTEM

‘As the title of the round table indicates, The Non-Existent Art Market in Slovenia (Round table, organized by the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies, in June 2013 in Ljubljana), brought the following into focus: The fine arts market in Slovenia is virtually non-existent. All participants agreed with the statement, whereby laying the blame on different reasons. For example, some believe that the fine arts sector has been neglected for a long time in the distribution of state finances, as well as whenever the state earmarks some funds, this is done in a wrong way, whereas others point the finger at poor fine arts education within the education system, third parties blame the lack of media coverage, while individuals believe that the gallery network is functioning poorly. However, the art critic and art historian, Brane Kovič, underlined, for example, that the taste of Slovenians in fine arts stopped developing one hundred years ago, because we still appreciate only impressionists, whereas representatives of later styles live on borrowed time and vegetate.

Meanwhile, Judita Krivec Dragan, responsible for the fine arts sector at the Ministry of Culture, revealed that in many places abroad art is regarded as a less risky investment compared with shares, therefore, sales have been increasing again in developed countries, whereas in Slovenia fine arts are still considered as a treat for the rich…

As a result, Brane Kovič looks at the situation in Spain. A Spaniard, who becomes rich, feels the urge to give something back to his town, region and then the country. When he accumulates wealth, he initially supports local artists, followed by national artists and, in the final stage, his collection undergoes internationalization.

Furthermore, Judita Krivec Dragan laid great stress upon the fact that the Ministry of Culture developed specific mechanisms to support the growth in demand in this market, namely a tax incentive for everyone, who would like to invest into art, and plans to devote from 0.5 to 1 % of public investments into the purchase of fine arts. In addition, the status of stakeholders in this field should be regulated according to the German model, where artists are neither classified as a social category nor holders of a state scholarship, but being an artist is simply one of the forms of employment.

Moreover, the art critic and journalist, Iztok Premrov, is convinced that this field is debilitated to such an extent due to basic mistakes which have been made several decades ago, because no systematic investments into the market were made with purchases of works and, in general, developed, for instance, by searching for talents, as the whole sphere relied solely on commission sales, which do not represent any risk and, therefore, do not create capital.’

The quotations from the media report (Sandra Krkoč: Fine Arts Market / In Search of a New System, Dnevnik, Page 16, June 26, 2013, Ljubljana) from about two years ago clearly outline and address almost the whole issue the Slovenian fine artists have to face, if they seek a new owner for their works. An owner, who will find several benefits in the obtained work: the aesthetic value, the financial aspect of today (the capacity to own it) and future advantages (as a financial investment, passed down to the next generation, namely ancestors).

The auction to be held on Sunday, November 22, 2015, at 18.00, will be preceded by three evening events on November 17, 19 and 20, at 18.00, hosting the following experts in tax legislation, domestic and abroad tax incentives and the development of the American and neighboring Croatian market in fine arts: Dr. Miha Ažman, Mag. Boštjan Petauer, Aleš Sedmak, President of the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies, and Mag. Nikola Albanež (Zagreb). We kindly invite all art-lovers, collectors and experts, owners and potential buyers, as well as interested artists in fine arts to attend these evening gatherings. Works for action will be displayed in the DLUL Gallery from November 14, 2015.

All proceeds from of this auction will benefit Ela, the daughter of the deceased photographer Jure Breceljnik.
